Saturday am
I got up early this morning to have breakfast and conversation with some friends, Bob and A. Jeep stopped by with a little girl he was baby sitting. So cute.
We had great conversation that ranged from multiculturalism and how the British are redefining themselves, how Bob will do multiculturalism in his mission field, how my honeymoon was, love and giving up on love, A's sunglasses that broke, how napkins provide endless entertainment for the little girl, how the week went with Mother-in-Law and Sister-in-Law, and so much more.
It was wonderful.
Bob is driving to WV today, A is driving to her parents' soon this week, and Jeep is working: job hunting. I am here, no longer suddenly portable.
We also talked about community, and how our communities seem to be so stretched out and distant, and how hard/slow it is to build a community where you've just moved or if you are always on the go.
Then Jeep and I went with Little Girl to a thrift store and McKay's. Here is a list of my book purchases, in MLA format (except for the hanging indent):
Brasheares, Ann. The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. New York: Delacorte, 2001.
Eliot, Elisabeth. Shadow of the Almighty: The Life & Testament of Jim Eliot. San Francisco: Harper & Row, 1979.
Thoene, Bodie. A Daughter of Zion. Minneapolis: Bethany House, 1987.
---. The Key to Zion. Minneapolis: Bethany House, 1988.
Thoene, Brock and Bodie. The Twilight of Courage. Nashville: Thomas Nelson, 1994.
Urvater, Michele. Chocolate Cake: 150 Recipes from Simple to Sublime. New York: Broadway Books, 2001.
Zeuschner, Raymond. Communicting Today. 2nd Edition. Boston: Allyn and Bacon, 1997.
Yay. So, more housework today, then a thing tonight with some women. Hooray.
Husband just got home. I love him. Time for lunch.

Heroes
At dinner recently with a group of Christian high school and college students, I asked whether they had any heroes. There was silence. They looked at each other, then looked blankly back at me. Heroes? What is a hero?
I was taken aback. While they discussed definitions I remembered what a long list of heroes I had when I was their age. I would have had no difficulty in answering the question had I asked, not would it have been necessary to define the word. Gideon, David, Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, Hans the Hero of Haarlem, Florence Nightingale, and Abraham Lincoln were on my list, along with a good many nineteenth- and twentienth-century missionaries.
No, was the answer of my dinner companions. They had no heroes.
Is there anyone, then, whom you admire?
A short pause, then, hesitantly, well, yes--some rock stars, a few athletes--people not by any means always exemplary in many ways, but they had a goal they worked hard for.
Feeling very sorry for these young people, and a bit desperate, I asked if there was anyone they wanted to be like. The answer was an immediate and definite no. They wanted to do their own thing, be their own person. That seems to me to be a hard assignment. If we are to find the channel and the harbor, surely we need some lights to steer by." (emphasis mine)

Lists
Read this. It seems interesting to me. Especially if you like lists.
I got addicted to lists when I was 1) finishing my school year, 2) moving 1,000 miles, 3) getting married another 1400 miles away, and 4) arranging places for me and Husband to stay during the move.
I list when I pack for a weekend trip; otherwise, I take way too many clothes!
And here's a McSweeney list that made me giggle. Read it aloud to someone and laugh!
Another McSweeney list: for the educators among you.
And I've never liked his eyebrows either. It's one reason why I've never bothered to watch the OC.

Breakfast Casserole
Husband told me about a week ago that he had to bring breakfast food for his colleagues today. I remembered yesterday afternoon while waiting for the UPS man (who still hasn't come), and finished it last night. I popped it in the oven this morning and it was delish.
I got the recipe from Joy of Cooking but ended up changing it because 1) it's not a cake and I can't ruin it and 2) I didn't read the recipe well enough to realize my mistake before 11pm. So here's my variation on the recipe:

Finally 1
1 Person I Want to Meet Right Now:
My great-grandfather on my mother's side.
Mom's mom's dad. He died when I was three months old, and my granddad flew from California to Pennsylvania, while my mom flew with me from Denver to Pennsylvania. It turns out they were on the same plane, so Papa got to meet me, but not in the nicest circumstances.

Aloha Hawai'i
I’ve been thinking about the things I loved about Hawaii and the things that drove me bonkers.
I miss the ocean, that it was always there reflecting the sky. It was the most beautiful during sunsets, when the sky and the endless water reflected each other, changing from blue to purple and pink and orange to indigo to black.

Carrot on a Stick
Why is “just when you stop looking” such a big deal in the world? Before Husband and I started dating, that was what so many people said to me: “...and you know, just when I stopped looking, there he was! He’s my hero, and I love him. God brought him into my life at just the right time!”
Ok, God did bring Husband into my life at just the right time, and Husband is the best gift God’s given me besides salvation! I love him and can’t wait for the next 5 weeks! (Haha!)

I'm reading Ephesians these days. I had decided a year ago to try to memorize it, and I'm still trying to get started. Maybe it will help to tell the Internet my goal. Or maybe not...in any case, I'm just now making memory cards to help me memorize 6 verses at a time.

Now Reading/Listening
In college, it was unhip (at least in the English department) to listen to Contemporary Christian Music and to read Christian fiction. So for me to admit what I'm reading/listening to in such a public forum is a big step. But here I come, into the fresh clean light of truth!
I am reading
Geisha, a Life by Mineko Iwasaki
Memoirs of a Geisha: A Novel by Arthur Golden
The Protector by Dee Henderson
Several Martha Stewart cookbooks
Southern Living Christmas cookbooks ($1 apiece at McKay's! a steal!)
Ephesians (in the Bible)
I am listening to
Cher (Jeep gave me a ton of his Cher...he was "Cher"ing with me!) My favorite is It's a Man's World
The Opera Band's Amici Forever
Husband's Alabama (not my fave, but I love Husband)
Avalon's Testify to Love: The Very Best of Avalon
I like Cher for housework, Amici Forever for cooking, and Avalon for whatever.
So...what are you reading/listening to? Tell the truth, even if it's unhip.

First Entry
Hey! I am back in the Chattanooga area. Husband and I just got here about a week and a half ago, and we celebrate our three-week-and-two-day wedding anniversary today.
Speaking of today, I still have to head up the mountain to do laundry at the lovely College Laundry Facilities before I come back to pick Husband up to go to the SuperWalGrocery Store. So this is it for the big inaugural post.
Upcoming posts:
- Harry Potter and what I think of Book 6. (Remember, I wrote my SIP on Harry Potter.)
- How marriage is going.
- I'm so tired of living out of boxes and suitcases.
- Our weekend at the lake house with Sister and her In-Laws.
- How U-Haul allowed me to feel part of Seinfeld. ("That's why you have a reservation. It reserves the car!")
- A great fiction story idea I have.
- The way to a man's heart...
- How people react to me back in the area. ("You married him?")
