Firsts Meme

I read TulipGirl a lot, and here's a meme she recently did.

First Memory
We used to travel from Colorado Springs to Denver every Saturday when I was little. I don't really remember the trips, but I do remember being in my car seat in the back seat of the car, at night, getting close to Colorado Springs and being woken by the lights on the interstate. Then, before I knew it, we were pulling into our driveway, and Dad would pick me up and put me in bed.

First Kiss
Ick. Unfortunately, not Husband, but I ignore that as often as possible. (I was 19, standing in the elevator lobby of my dorm, during finals week, and an RA had just unloaded 9 bags of garbage from the elevator...and this guy and I kissed.) My first real kiss (with Husband) was last year. We drove all the way from Pennsylvania to Covenant for Madrigals, and we drove to the place he was staying after attending the Madrigal Dinner, and sat in the car in the dark and talked. And then... :)

First Love
So many crushes! But I did love this guy I dated before Husband. It was a really selfish, demanding, childish love, though.

First thing you think in the morning
"Already?" Saturdays and Sundays: "Aaaah, I don't have to get out of bed yet!"

First book you remember loving
Little House in the Big Woods

First pet
We had family pets from before Sister and I were born (cats), and Omamma had a dog. But the first pet my family ever got was Precious, a dog from the humane society. She was very sweet, and we all loved her. She died when I was a senior in high school, of old age.

First place you think of when you hear the word vacation
A beach.

First best friend
I had a lot of different friends growing up, and none ever seemed to stay friends with me.

Last time you dressed up
Today. My interview suit: black pantsuit that really flatters my curves, a light blue blouse, and really excellent heeled shoes.

Last thing you ate
Peanut butter (creamy) and jelly (strawberry) on white bread.

Last CD bought
Love Songs: A Compilation by Phil Collins. I'm going to go put it on now.

Last time you cried
Last week. I was waiting for a phone call following an interview. They hadn't called yet, and I figured they would call me if they wanted me. BUT I called them back yesterday and they still haven't decided on their candidate. I might still get in!

Last time you told someone you loved them
This morning, Husband. With a kiss and hug.

Last really fun thing you did
Last Saturday, date with Husband.

Last thing you watched on TV
Sesame Street, this morning. Childrens' TV when I'm 25% awake is great. Except Elmo is obnoxious. Why can't he use a pronoun? But his combed facial fur is very cute.

Last Halloween Costume
A clown. Preschool.

Last concert attended
A choral concert in Colorado Springs. Can't remember who they performed, but it was lovely. Handel, maybe.

My wife and I have been reading TulipGirl for about a year now. I check your blog just about daily. I have noticed lately that she has slowed the blogging way down. I guess we are all entitled to a break now and then. :-)

Wow. That's a lot of self-disclosure. It makes me think of a friend who recently criticized the blogging endeavor. If I remember rightly, he said it was too public, too random (although you have conveniently organized your posts by topic -- will you tell me how to do that), and too difficult for people to engage with their comments (leaving a typical "good thought" instead of the atypical "I like premise a, but have you thought about the implications of conclusion c?"). This friend also pointed to posts like your latest one and said that blogs seem to be much more about the blogger herself than they are about having community conversations. So I hemmed and hawed my way through a sortof rebuttal, but I've never been all that great at defending blogs.

Nor have I been all that skillful at figuring out how blogs help me or why I blog... and yet I blog and blog again.

Any thoughts?

For that matter, do you have any thoughts about your life of firsts, now that you wrote them all down? Writing things like that down help me to see patterns in them or to reach conclusions about my memories.

Those really weren't the firsts that were most important to me. Here are some firsts that are:

First time I remember realizing more depth of Jesus' unconditional mercy to me: I was driving up the mountain, after a tough day of student teaching. I had recently broken up with that guy I'd loved, was afraid of graduating, was missing my old friends who'd I neglected in this dating-time with that guy, and the sun was dappling through the fresh full-grown spring leaves, the air was warm (not quite summer but warmer than spring), and I realized Jesus died to get me into the Kingdom of God and to keep me there. Yeah.

First time I realized I really did want to be a teacher: I helped a student with her math homework one day I had underplanned for my lessons, and a month later she wrote me a cute thank-you, and promised to dedicate her next boxing match to me. She won the match, and I still have the note.

First time I realized I would never go teach in Latvia, as I've always wanted to do, but would instead marry Husband posthaste, because I wanted that more: January 2005.

First time I realized I had my own relationship with Bridesmaid Three, instead of just a coattail-relationship through my family: November 2004.

First time I realized how much the little things (that align with my job as a Biblically-centered wife) really mean to Husband: the other day. I had told the director of the Covenant Alumni Choir that I couldn't sing a SantyClaus song at the same concert we'd be singing songs about Christ; after reporting this conversation to Husband, he got quiet and just hugged me.
